Research on Town Names

My current novel is set along the New Jersey shoreline where I live. One of the settings found in my story is known as Shipbottom. The town was named after a shipwreck that occurred in March of 1817,when a boat was capsized and a young woman was rescued by a boat captain, who cut her from the overturned hull with an ax. I just love researching the history of our local towns. Another favorite beach locality is Mantaloking, which is named from the Lenni-Lenape Indians word for “sand place”.

If you travel further down south, you will come to Tuckerton, which is a port of entry, not to be confused with the shore’s third port of entry. Tuckerton was named for its founder, Ebenezer Tucker. Before that time, the area was known as Clamtown, because it had been settled as a clamming community.
